Avicularia versicolor pics
Got a few pics of my Avic. versi there today, pics not the mae west, but plenty of time to practice them spider pics. I was only after misting and feeding him/her, so I left it alone in the tub, and got a few photos..
This ones so cool, I'll have to break out the bat again, in honour of its badass-ness!!
Its a class little spider and I'm glad to have got it, I'll have to be getting a couple more soon enough too
I have a nice sized plastic jar for its next house, and I think I'll put it into that after its next molt, seem OK in this tub for now though
Thanks for looking

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
Now that's class! It's so cool and definitely worthy of the Bat The colours and markings are fantastic. I've just googled them and as adults all I could say was WOW!
Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
Yeah the colour change they go through is something else altogether!
As cool as the adults are though, I'd kind of like if they stayed blue too! It will be a really strong electric blue over the next few molts I'd say.
I said WOW when I first saw these too, and had to get one then, cheap as chips too, you really can't go wrong with spiders !
Cheers

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
New enclosure. even though this spiderling is still quite small, i felt it needed an upgrade to a more comfortable enclosure. I was a bit apprehensive about moving it again, especially as it had settled in nicely into its old tub, but since these photos were taken on Monday, it has already started to lay the foundations to a new web structure.
And a new one taken today, first time taking it out of the enclosure to attempt a half decent close up photo. I put it on a sheet of styrofoam..
Thanks for looking

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
Best cure for arachnophobia? A spider. Seriously.
A few years ago, if I saw a tarantula in a shop I would be pretty unnerved, especially if there was one out being handled, but always found them very interesting from a distance. Then I asked to handle one of the more docile species one day and got over my irrational fear of them straight away.
The vast majority of the time people's fears are grossly irrational; a bit like that Gillian McKeef dose in the Jungle. YOu don't want people making those comparisons Elaine now do you It will be good experience for your plan to be a veterinary nurse too lol!
Ah all joking aside Elaine, I think you would be quickly converted if you were to get one. Honestly. In fact I think the time is ripe, so go forth and get yourself a nice little spider ASAP or I'll send the stormtroopers 'round

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
best wind up your stormtroopers so matt i have held one and found it fascinating to watch it move on my hand but be barely able to feel it i just know my mother would have a heart attack if i said i was getting a spider, i really think she would fling me out followed closely by my small zoo.
im not afraid of them as such i just have this thing about a big one escaping at night when im asleep.....ok so maybe i am a little afraid of them so but dont tell anyone

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
Look at all that webbing and it's interesting where he is placing it too.
Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
Yeah it is interesting to see just how quickly he/she has got to work on its new web after being moved into this jar, which, if my research serves me right, is a great sign that an Avic. has accepted its enclosure and feels at ease with its new environment/climate.
As far as where it has decided to position the web structure, I think up high in the enclosure is a pretty standard spot for an Avic. to choose.
When I put the bark upright in place along with the fake leaf, my thinking was to encourage him/her to start its webbing between both fixtures, so as to leave me clear access to the bottom to remove any bolus or other waste with a tweezers. In the end, it opted to use the side of the jar and the leaf as its main anchor points, which still worked out pretty convenient for doing spot checks.
It looks as though it will eventually form a pretty cool tunnel, with webbing reaching down to the bark upright too. I don't know how easy that will leave spot checks, but itwill look cool!
Getting another T next week, Avic. diversipes, really looking forward to getting that one!!
Cheers

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
Some Post molt pics...
Not my usual camera, but these turned out OK for a 4.0 megapixel snapper! I was delighted to see it come through its first molt in my care, it is almost 10mm bigger in legspan now, and colouring up nicely. Little strands of red appearing on the abdomen too...

The same jar as in this thread Joe... Its grand in there till the next molt at the very least, but I have a few 8x6x6 arboreal HOS enclosures on the way, one of which will be for him/ her

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
The Avic. versicolor has been webbing like crazy lately.
It looks pretty tidy from here...
...but in behind the upright and leaf is this... It looks like a mess in this photo, but its actually an intricate little network of tubes and tunnels (exits marked)
(I don't keep the enclosure at the window, I just put it there for some decent light for the photos!)
The vertical exit, marked in black, started out as an independent hanging tube (the exit the Avic is at in the first pic),
then a bed was weaved, suspended above substrate level, and the horizontal exits, marked red and blue, were added, and eventually it was all knitted together...
A dodgy couple of photos of a pretty cool looking part of the web structure...
Its hard to make out here, but thats one of the exits, a cone shaped tube, the spider people will see it straight off, hopefully it is clear to all!
The jar has gone cloudy and there is a fine film of web attached to the surface in places, so photos from the outside are not easy to get
This is the exit marked in red in the previous photo
Feeding well, as you can see
Leg Span measures at 35mm in this photo, I think the true measurement is 37mm if the hind leg was in its natural position

Re: Avicularia versicolor pics
This is a SUPERBLY informative and interesting post Matt and thank you for the update on this wee stunner.
It is amazing to see the what they are capable of and what can look like a total mess is actually a well constructed, intricately designed home, with many options available to him should trouble come in one end, there is an exit in either direction. Wonderful little architect you have there.
