New arrival
Folks,
I'm delighted to let you know that our hedgehog family have grew from two to seven.
Female have delivered 5 healthy babies on monday night.
She's totally into it as I don't see her coming out of a nest box except for a quick meals.
I only had a chance to take a quick peak at them yesterday morning. Actually one of the youngsters have wondered outside the house so I had to lift it up to bring it back to mother. Lovely little babies they are.
I'll try to post some pictures soon.
@Tanpira:
Could you let me know if I should register them ?? do I need to know their parent registry details ??

Re: New arrival
Congratulations and don't take ages with the pics...can't wait and well done again... Tan's busy today, however, will likely get back to you later today or tomorrow AM....
Re: New arrival
Cheers Tony,
Female is very protective of her litter. I heard she was out of the nest box for a meal only few mins ago but before I got to the cage (2 feet away from me) she was back inside and wrapped around them :)
She will give hard time trying to get a few snaps of the kiddos

Re: New arrival
If she doesn't know you well, be very careful, actually even if she does as filial is common although never once had it myself but my hogs are well used to space being invaded at all times lol although could happen at any time so just be aware.
Just send me details and I'll get certs off to you via e-mail, it's free and you'll join the over 20,000 people in the data base, how cool is that!!!!
As Tony said, don't wait too long for pictures and we can call colour around 9weeks unless obvious like albino or cini etc....and finally CONGRATULATIONS

Re: New arrival
Looks like four darks there and do we have an albino??? A litter shot next week and if possible of closed eyes and well get a better picture but nice to see the babies. Well done too as brow is raised so mum must not have felt too threatened. I love the little squeakers at this size
Re: New arrival
Mum is great! She didn't make any fuss when I was taking pictures.
I gonna leave them alone now until next thursday or so and let them grow big and strong
Who's eye's closed and why ??
What sort of details will you need to register them ??

Re: New arrival
The babies eyes, because even with lids down we can still see if that light one has light or dark eyes so we'd know what colour class it's going to be, that's all.
Minimally for registration all I need is your name, area, email and hogs sex, colour and mum and dads sex and colour. If you don't know lineage it doesn't matter we can start with the mum and babies or the babies, it's up to you. Usually we also put where they came from so if say mum was purchased in a store and her name was mum and you're a small private breeder your certificate will read PTS mum SPP.

Re: New arrival
I know parents were registered and it would be good idea to continue their line. I will contact their previous owner and try to get parent's certs.
If I won't get it we'll start a new line.
As for the shot with closed eyes we'll see what we can do :)

Re: New arrival
I regret to inform that one of the babies is gone. It disappeared tottaly.
The only thing that comes to my head is that mum ate it.
It was 5 day old. They were doing very good so I'm really dissappointed.
Hopefully the other 4 will live.

Re: New arrival
Sorry to hear you lost one of the babies. You're lucky if shes only taken one as usually when they do this they will destroy the entire litter but it isn't uncommon to pick out one or two. Obviously it's all speculation as we don't know for sure what's going on in mums head but the hoglet could have been imperfect or she just reduced numbers. Also it is the case more often then not that all trace of the hoglet will be removed.
I would thread carefully with her from now on. The oldest litter I've heard fall victim to filial was 4weeks old, again uncommon but possible and unlike your five day old which would have been quick, the older they are the more horrific the death.

Must be one of these. If she freaked out in stress she'd defo kill all of them. Babies are quite a size now that's why I don't understand there was no sign after one that disappeared.
It's over for that one so as Tony wrote - fingers crossed for the rest of them.

Re: New arrival
If I got it right there are two males and two females.
Males will be for sale once they reach 8 weeks of age.
Gonna keep females for obvious reason.
Can you call a color yet Tan ???
