Super Sawu Empty Super Sawu

Post by morelia Tue Feb 07, 2012 6:04 am

I've been after a little Sawu python for donkeys and resigned myself to the fact that the chances of getting one in the UK were slimmer than slim. A big thanks must therefore go to Trunx who recently made this little female available. A truly super little python! His Dunn's and Macks are super too, dude keep a hold if you can and make more little Dunn's and Macks! The male Timor Mack was especially nice....Liasis are so under-rated.

Heres a few shots of the little female Sawu, over the moon at finally getting one of these!

This python has the smallest range of any python species in the World, being confined to ONE island - Sawu Island - that is 10 miles long by 6 miles wide i.e. only ~60 square miles in area! It was also discovered recently, being classified in 1954 as a subspecies of Macklot's python (although now regarded as a distinct species - Liasis savuensis) and entered into American herpetoculture in 1993, when U.S. herpers went mad for this super little python. Soon after this, Sawu Island closed its doors to export to save the population from overcollection - a wise move. An early name for it was the 'White-eyed python', a good name for its the only non-morph python to have white eyes in adulthood.

Why there aren't more pythons like this being kept and bred I'll never know!

Im glad you took it, i know how much you'll appreciate it. not to many people appreciate a nice liasis.

I'm gonna keep both dunns. I'll maybe need you to photograph them as i never capture their beauty!
Again, great photos and get a male! You know who to contact...

interesting observation from the barkers at vpi (the first to captive bred them).
they reckon wild caught mature females will never breed in captivity. apparently they mate as normal, but never ovulate so never reproduce.

the first cb came from a wc female that was just shy of maturing when it was caught.

i thought that was an interesting observation.................

I've made enquiries already Very Happy It would be a shame to at least not have a go at getting some eggs and hatchlings of these super wee pythons. I hope all goes well for your Mack pairing, the male is a belter! Happy days on the Dunn's, I'll keep my ear to the ground for a male to do the biz.

Cool, strange that they should do that. I wonder if it has to do with stress in the adults as a result of the move into captivity?

Looking great, nobody could dislike based on those shots!

As for not many people appreciating liasis, I would happily have kept your two and appreciated them every day if you'd wanted Trunx! Wink

That snake has a very charming little face, such a cute little python. Good luck with her, hope you do manage to get a breeding project going. That would be awesome.
