Re: sumatran retic on the way!
I'm sure Lisa will be able to offer some fantastic advice as she is 'The Retic Guru' but I just wanted to say congrats and looking forward to seeing pics whenever he's arrived and settled. He sounds lovely.

Top Tip: Your retic can and will out-smart you! :)
Looking forward to pics. These are a smashing locale and one I've taken a shine to.

Re: sumatran retic on the way!
Reticguru my backside
Not really sure what advice you're looking for as I don't know if you have experience with retics or not - or even large snakes in general.
They are considered the largest locale of retic, and get VERY big. Even males are known to get pretty big pretty quickly! Once you're ready and prepared for that, you should be grand.
And don't take him being forever chilled out for granted
Have you kept retics before?

Re: sumatran retic on the way!
i have had a wee sd retic since xmas there, havent kept any big snake before just boas, but have handled some. i am taking this step now as its constantly in the back of my head. i know what i am doing and i have done my research. im not just some eekit looking a big snake.retics always fascinated me,prefer them to the likes of a burm.
if i dont do this now i never will.
it was really just some tips i was looking.maybe little things you have picked up with experience over the years.

Re: sumatran retic on the way!
One thing I learned early was don't feed them every time they show signs of feeding or you'll be giving them every other day,lol....
Also as Milca already said...these snakes are exceptionally intelligent with long memories and will try their luck and test your nerve every once in a while !!
Ps, they are greased lighting and silly strong for their size
Look forward to pics of your new arrival

Re: sumatran retic on the way!
Hi Dunlop, I remember you now...I believe we had a chat about that Sd. How is he getting on?
Did you get the sumatran yet? Would love to see pics! One word of advice I can think of - get into a habit of approaching the retics with a hook from day one and tap them before taking them out. It's not nice to be mistaken for food!

Re: sumatran retic on the way!
Tap training is definately worth getting it used to from day 1.....works a treat on our 2 wee ones though the g stripe is a little slower on the uptake,lol....

Re: sumatran retic on the way!
How do guys think I feel? I'm busting to get him home!
And yes hook training will be implimented! I do it with most of mine at the minute anyway.
I have heard that if they are in too big an enclosure they get territorial? Any experience with this lisa? and also, have you heard of the sumatrans being called 'silver retics'?
Believe me when I say he will be the most photographed snake on here!I will keep you all posted.you will be sick looking at him!

Re: sumatran retic on the way!
Glad to hear the SD is doing good, most laid back little retic ever! If he'd been a girl he definitely would have been staying here!
I've noticed the territorial thing on a small scale alright with younger retics. I think it's definitely good to grow younger retics on in smaller enclosures as they build up confidence and become regular feeders. They're not always as good at that when small as you might think!
It would be more my concern that a retic would feel uncomfortable in a very large enclosure rather than him/her being defensive. Just about all of ours are extremely viv defensive anyway
Keep younger retics in smaller enclosures, then as they mature give them as much space as you can. (A young retic in a relatively huge enclosure is probably not a good idea). They're very active snakes as I'm sure you've realised with the sD and I hate seeing them cooped into small spaces.
Some snakes do not appreciate big vivs, regardless of hides etc. You'll just have to read your snake and provide for him/her as best you can.
I have noticed retics becoming even more defensive when their vivs are upgraded, but most settle. As long as they are not upset and continue to feed etc, it doesn't bother me.
I haven't heard of the sumatrans being called silver retics. There are a few 'silver' retics in collections that are high silver variations on mainlands as far as I'm aware - Imperial retics have one.
can't wait to see pics! What sort of set up is he going into when he comes home?
