Hedgies and Snakes
Hi all
Just wondering for those of you with hegehogs and snakes is it ok to keep them in the same room? Obviously no actual contact or anything and the cages would be as far apart as possible but would the smell of the snake bother the hedgies or would the hedgies smell like food to the snake? Just curious because I'd love to get a royal python or a hognose but the tank would have to be in the same room as the hedgies so I'm not too sure Dont want the hedgies to be scared!

Re: Hedgies and Snakes
I couldn't speak for hedgehogs getting stressed due to the snake, Tan would be to best person to answer that one.
As far as a snake is concerned, if the snake was due a feed, the smell of the hedgies in theory could induce a feeding response if you put your hand in the viv, althoughI have fat tailed gerbils in the same room as my snakes and haven't had any problem, I'm just very careful that I make sure I wash my hands well if I'm doing something with the gerbils and then move to the snakes.

Thanks Marty yeah I'll be sure to scrub my hands before going between the two if I do get a snake don't fancy smelling like its dinner
I'm hoping the hedgies wouldn't be too bothered cos the more I see of snakes and read up on them the more I'd love one!

Re: Hedgies and Snakes
I have yet to find something that genuinely upsets the hogs and prevents them from their daily activities. Small they may be but hard as nails in most cases.
Marty has correctly pointed out the risks where the snake is concerned.
Not one of my hogs gives a toss about the snakes were fear is concerned (or any hog I have ever had here including wildlife) BUT if you've handled a snake you may well get bitten as they seem very interested in this possible food source. It makes total sense as they will eat snakes in the wild, they make up part of their natural diet and as I'm sure you know, hogs don't really discriminate on diet in the wild so tbh you may find you get sampled by not only the snake but the hogs too

Re: Hedgies and Snakes
Haha I wouldn't have expected it happen that way around although harvey is the fusiest eater I've ever seen refuses everything but catfood... wont even eat mealworms so I doubt he'll want to taste snake, might try annoint with the smell though
Thats great to hear. Now just have to convince my mother that a snake would be a great addition to the family... this may take a few months

Sounds like you'll be grand then, it's the convincing that's the difficult part
been there done that
been there done that
Re: Hedgies and Snakes
Can't believe it but I just ended up having a talk about snakes with her and I'm pretty sure she'll let me get one thought I'd have to at least bribe her somehow
Think I'll just wait untill the end of the college year though I have a feeling a snake would be far too much of a distraction from studying for exams!

Re: Hedgies and Snakes
You hit the nail on the head Joe
Pickles, that was pretty painless, how did you manage that so quickly, i think you need to give me some tips, it takes me weeks to talk the missus round to letting me have a new animal..........

Re: Hedgies and Snakes
That's great news and Joe is right, not too distracting and a welcome distraction when you need one from studies. Go you!!!
Re: Hedgies and Snakes
They might not be too distracting for the average person but I happen to be a very skilled procrastinator! I often end up cleaning the whole house to avoid college work
I have no idea how she was convinced so easily especially because she isnt an animal person at all. She hasn't said yes for definate yet but I'm 90% sure she will. I had all sorts of plans to offer to paint the house over the summer or promise not to get a tattoo for a few more years lol... that was far too easy

Re: Hedgies and Snakes
Yep
It feels like it was far too easy to get her to say yes, I'd say it still might take a bit of bribery... might offer to paint the kitchen or something
