Re: Tail-Less Whip Scorpion....
Karl, I keep my pair in identical, low 9L RUBs....so plenty of floor space for these guys to creep around on at night...I pop a few small crickets in the housing and monitor numbers over a few days, I haven't seen one of these guys feed, so the only way you know is by the number [or lack thereof] of crickets...temps and humidity around 75 degrees F and 75% respectively...so pretty much room temp T settings, this appears to be working well at present....the housing itself is sparsely furnished, sphagnum moss to aid humidity, a cork bark shelter/hide [you'll find these guys on the underside during daylight hours] set on a coco fibre/vermiculite substrate...I'll probably throw in a few more pieces of bark in due course....oh and before I forget, I do provide a drink lid of crystal water...and that's pretty much it mate!!morelia wrote:Never kept these myself but AWESOME arachnids - how easy / hard to you find them to keep Tony? Thanks for the info Tony, these are very interesting.
I know you've seen them in the wild too - what sort of habitat did they live in?

Come on then.....Tan.....how big did you really think that these were? :)
These poor guys have even had some press of being the most demonic thing on earth. I guess they look it, but a real softy they be.
Re: Tail-Less Whip Scorpion....
I saw one in Hamm and it was larger then this one, or so I thought but then I am getting old and the memory isnt quite what it used to be Still fantastic looking regardless of size.

Karl, around 150 species of Amblipygi have been discovered as at 2003 according to Wikipedia....this particular chap is Damon variegatus, Tanzanian Giant Tail-Less Whip Scorpion....dude, in all honesty I couldn't tell the difference at a glance...the one I uncovered in W. Africa was identical but far larger...the pair I have here are bambinos at the mo....so Tan you can quite rightly call them cute!!!...
Re: Tail-Less Whip Scorpion....
@Tony, it is true.....they all look the same.
No doubt some taxonomists have been busy under the microscope counting differences in bristles at the very tip of the feelers. (do I sound like a cynic?)
