superdwarf retic
Here's my little pet He's just about 16 months old now, placid as can be and so tiny. He's 100% het albino - so will make for some tiny interesting baby tics in future, hopefully!

Re: superdwarf retic
Thats a wee cracker you have there Lisa. Out of interest, when you say dwarf, how big will he actually get?
Re: superdwarf retic
ta jonty, just imagine how the albinos will look! Bob's hatching out the first of them this yr, all going well
He should even out at about 5 ft tops, going on his prior generation sibs, and stay very slim. The females don't seem to be getting any bigger than about 7 ft - and staying v slight bodied as well. This guy feels more like a corn snake than a retic!

My word Lisa that is small, what are they like temprament wise.
I asume that an albino dwarf is a relatively new concept?
Re: superdwarf retic
thanks tony
These superdwarfs stay tiny Jay. Not gonna get into the details here as it really needs its own thread! But this is a bob clark/mike wilbanks superdwarf - which allegedly comes from an undisclosed island location. So they are, apparently, pure locality retics. Which stay very small. And just look at this boy - his size at this age speaks for itself! My mainlands of only a few months old are much bigger than this now - on a different scale really. And even my dwarfs are huge in comparison.
Obviously there has been mainland influence along the way in this boy, to bring about the het albino. And as new morphs are introduced, it will take generations of careful selective breeding to maintain a small size.
But while some breeders will breed the likes of this guy directly to mainland animals, Bob assures me that all morphs that are introduced to the superdwarfs are bred down in size to dwarfs first. And he will not sell as a superdwarf morph unless there are a number of generations of breeding there to reduce size. Of course, with albinos you need a couple of generations anyway, as opposed to the likes of breeding a tiger to a superdwarf. (I can't guarantee any of this obviously, just passing along what bob has said!)
This is what many people are doing, and it's why I'm going to be very careful about where i buy my superdwarfs (and dwarfs for that matter). I have seen animals labelled as superdwarfs when they are a direct mainlandxmadu cross and the likes.
All i know is this guy is small, his parents and sibs are small - and time will tell how big the superdwarf morph sizes get.
Feeding habits and selective breeding of smaller snakes is important too as far as i'm concerned.
This little guy is brilliant. He's got all the traits of a retic, (although not as aggressive as some of ours!), just in a tiny package. Can't argue with that!

Hey jonty,
I have a pair of albino dwarfs that are just about ready to breed. They are relatively new - and as they continue to breed, the mainland influence will be further watered down.
As for the superdwarf albinos - yes, very new. Bob clark will be putting his first out this yr. Some people are selling what they call superdwarf albinos already, but they are still retaining a lot of mainland influence. I expect these to be very small, going on my male and his relations! But we'll see
Temperment wise, this guy is as docile as they come. But ben has some that originally came from per, and they're not so friendly i hear. Luck of the draw i guess!

Whenever you have a spare 30 minutes a new thread on the subject of superdwarfs would be fantastic Lisa...I mean you kind of volunteered there right?

That's great information Lisa, i've always liked retics but have never bought one as i know i would be unable to house something that big, but one of these guys, at 5' now that would be a different story
Re: superdwarf retic
Now, I wonder.... does your better half have any idea about this "different story"
Re: superdwarf retic
no worries guys, i'm procastinating on an assignment for col at mo but will gladly compose something once i have a chance. Noting that the classification of 'superdwarf' can be controversial at the best of times!!
Jonty - a male superdwarf will stay in a 3 ft viv - worse case scenario 4 ft viv - for life
They stay so slim they need much less space in comparison ti a bulkier snake of similiar length. And they've come down a hell of a lot in price also!!!

Re: superdwarf retic
thats cool. retics are stunning snakes its just the size some of them get that puts me off but i will have to keep an eye on this little fella, very intresting. i have seen a few on the net that say they are superdwarfs but still they look massive as for the temperment snakes will be snakes thats what makes them so cool.

that's what can be so confusing jay. i know of a particular guy in UK who has what he calls a 'superdwarf' at 12 ft
There is such a thing as very small superdwarfs, no doubt about it - and this guy and his lineage are proof of that
Re: superdwarf retic
i will look forward to seeing him. if you dont mind me asking what sort of price do they go for? are they about the same for a big retic ?

Re: superdwarf retic
you'll always pay more for dwarfs - in some cases a lot more
This guy cost us about $800 - but you really pay for the het albino. A regular superdwarf is about $500. So when you're dealing with sterling you see they really are quite affordable!
