Irish Jaguar project Empty Irish Jaguar project

Post by morelia Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:53 am

I've been up to something lately and its not quite Celtic Tiger, more like Irish Jaguar LOL......this is a pairing I've been dying to try for ages now, and was finally able to make it happen this year.

Once again my big female Coastal carpet python (Sheila, below) was showing signs of ovulating earlier in the year
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

So I turned my attention to my male Jaguar carpet python (Mac) to see if he would do the job
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Initially I was a tad apprehensive as he's a fraction of the size of Sheila, and they had never met before, so during initial introductions I kept a close eye
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It turns out they were rather fond of each other
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
(his spur can just about be seen in the photo above, tickling Sheila's back)

Tail wrapping

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Basking together

Within a few days mating was observed on and off
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Soon Sheila began to swell and it seemed Mac had done the job. A lot of basking and restlessness later, Sheila finally laid her eggs this morning
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

She laid 32 eggs which consisted of 1 infertile and 31 fertiles, of which 30 look perfect and 1 a little dodgy. While this isn't her largest clutch of eggs, it is the largest number of fertile eggs per clutch she has laid, so I'm over the moon.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Now the long wait and daily peeks into the incubator!
Sheila is still in her brooding mode, coiled in her hide and giving body contractions every now and then

Thanks Phil Very Happy

Coastal eggs usually hatch in the 60-65 day range, although mine have gone a little longer in the past. Anything up to ~80 days is within the normal incubation range for these guys.

Personally I prefer to separate the eggs out for incubation, but some good friends of mine in Germany leave them in a clump and incubate them that way. Its down to personal preference as either method gives good hatch rates.

The prices of Jags vary as much as the trait itself varies - there are many 'types' of Jags, for example Hypo, Red Hypo, Super Hypo, Ornate, Banded, High Contrast etc. and the prices of each type vary hugely depending on looks and parentage. The 'normal' looking Coastal siblings that also result from a Jag x wild type Coastal pairing also vary a great deal, so again these are priced accordingly. With Jags and Jag siblings it really is a case of getting what you pay for.

If you want specific prices for what might hatch out here, drop me a wee PM.

Oh you know me Warren, the Morelia are my big thing but I like to try a bit of everything. I have to say that between egg layers and livebearers, the latter are easier as the female does the hard work of temperature monitoring while the young develop (as long as she has a temp gradient to work with that is). That said, seeing a clutch of freshly laid eggs is a nice thing to come home too and the wait for hatching is always well worth it.

Rez, sorry only seeing your reply now - Coastals can have up to 45 in a clutch but my big girl typically lays around the 36 mark (including any infertiles).

Got back from Waterford late lastnight and peeked into the cooker, I got a big surprise.......first carpets are out at day 59! And the first one fully out was a wee male Jaguar too - feels like Xmas!!!! He has some nice dorsal striping too which I really like.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

This is him after a wash and pop, his egg tooth is still attached
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The first Jaguar sibling also has its head out
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

....can't wait until they're all out now and had their first shed, then they start to give an indication of what they can become! Theres another few out this morning but they still have to absorb the remainder of their yolk so not disturbing them for a while yet, also plenty more heads poking out.

Well done brother. I beleive you are correct. With the exception of irian Jayas wither genetic dorsal striping, these are the first real carpet morph in Ireland. Really pleased for you mate. Great news.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm stoked that this breeding has came through for me - grinning like a Cheshire cat since I got home lastnight!

Warren, I'd def love to know more about the genetic striped IJs - the granite is the only proven IJ morph I think, with T+ albino, spider and motley traits present but not yet proven. Who had them? Any pics?

Most of these guys are well started now and there are some very interesting ones among them. Although I love the Jags, its the Jag siblings I'm really impressed with. They get way overlooked IMO.

When you breed a Jaguar to a normal Coastal carpet, you get approx. 50% Jaguars in the clutch and 50% 'normal' looking Coastals, which are called 'Jaguar siblings'. The reason they get this name is that as they grow and mature, they can develop into something special - not your average Coastal. They inherit variable amounts of enhanced colouration (also seen in the Jaguars themselves) and can be very contrasty as adults. They also have a distinctively different patterning to normal Coastals, especially on the head and neck.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Because of their better colouration and contrast, they make the perfect breeding partner for a Jaguar - as everyone knows, the appearance of the offspring is largely dictated by the appearance of the parents, and so breeding a nice Jag to a nice Jag sibling produces Jags much better in appearance than if a Jag is bred to a wild type Coastal carpet.

I can't wait to see how these guys develop!
