Re: Your Colubrids
Hi all,
This thread's still going strong..thanks for all input to date, it's really awesome to see what's out there, strange though, I haven't seen a single Ribbon or Garter snake of any description, or one of my favourite colubrids, the Bull Snake. And here's something else we've not posted on the thread to date, recognised rear fanged colubrids, Boiga species...Cat Snakes, Mangroves...more potently venomous colubrids such as the Boomslang...of course it could be that nobody keeps them....but if you do let's have an image up....

Re: Your Colubrids
Is that the one I was going to get for you Debs that had been in Wales or is this a dif one? Not bad at all for a freebie but it doesn't look Mexican to me and does look like Texas do you not think? Either way mines about to shed so should see some nice reds coming in me thinks :)
Pitviper can you PM where your getting your adult if you don't mind as Im looking myself. Which Bairds is it your getting and really looking forward to pics whenever you do get it.
You know what I wana see in this thread is a nice big Indigo. IF anyone has one make me green and get some pics up, been mad after one for a long time now.

Re: Your Colubrids
Tan:.. Yeah the big male is yes.. Ended up going over myself. Had a nice break and met up with some mates of another forum. Was great.
Most of the collection has either come from private breeders or imprted from the US/Europe. Virtually impossible to get any good quality ratsnakes in pet shops here. they're still not really a popular colubrid which I find mad as the variety is I think comparible to the morphs available in corns.
In terms of the bairds.. I have no idea if its texas/mexican strain.. more likely the texas. more common in the trade...
Mine has already started to have scales change to red/orange colours.
Its a mystery snake.. Will just have to wait and see what it turns into. :)

Re: Your Colubrids
She's looking good Trunx. Very beautiful snakes aren't they? I love this girl to look at but the smell she can produce is interesting, stinking Goddess is right lol how you finding her?
Re: Your Colubrids
Spectacular looking snake Trunx...and I'm figuring that's why folk keep these right? I mean looks have to cancel out anal gland offerings ...below is an extract from another keeper that I thought pretty interesting.....the keeper refers to Ophiophagus where he actually means ophiophagous, deriving from "Ophiophagy" (Greek ὄφις + φαγία "snake eating") is a specialized form of feeding or alimentary behavior of animals which hunt and eat snakes.
Of course, ophiophagus refers to snake eating, however, is specifically related to the King Cobra or Hamadryad and it's genus [Ophiophagus hannah] anyway read on.....
"This snake, however, was unlike any other in its strength and quality of stink. It is, indeed, the Goddess of Stinking. Or, in my King's case, the God of Stinking (he's a male; he was shipped to my friend with a female as part of a potential breeding pair, but he ate her, and this is why you keep potentially ophiophagus snakes singly, especially when young). The odor is something along the lines of rotting meat, combined with burning cabbage, with a hint of freshly cut grass, the latter of which does not, strangely enough, improve the smell, but instead serves as an awful reminder of just how bad the rest of it is. You pick up the grassy smell first, thinking, "Hmm, maybe it's not so bad," but before you can finish that thought, the rest of it hits your olfactory senses like a creeping miasma from a sewer in a town full of people with rotting colons and only cabbage to eat.
And then, when you try to wash it off, it doesn't go. It penetrates and sticks to your skin like a dye pack from a bank robbery. I scrubbed, scrubbed some more, and used stronger and stronger soaps. I finally lucked out by using my brand new Scrubbie from Mama V soap--it exfoliated the stink out, and replaced it with the Scrubbie's coconut/cocoa butter scent. But oh dear GOD did I want to cut my hands off at first."
Trunx, quick question does this musking become less frequent as the snake gets used to being handled [much the same as a Grass Snake]??? If not you'd have a job convincing me to get one!!

Re: Your Colubrids
the snake is not to bad tan, its calm enough.
tony i had this snake 2 or 3 years ago, it was bonkers then. i give it to a mate when i let everything go, then mel ended up with it again (it came from her to start with), then lo and behold i got it back. hasnt bitten or musked me yet this time, but last tiime i had it it would bite anything that moves then musk you. boy does it stink, i had to throw clothes out last time it was that bad. the mate who took it handled the life clean out off it and it did calm down and hardly musked, so im thinking that regular handling can calm them a bit.
they are one of the most evil looking snakes i have come across, but one of the most beautiful too. if you ever hear of a male going anywhere let me know. i think i could find a unicorn easier than a male king.. i cant find one for love nor money.............

Re: Your Colubrids
I rather like that extract. The description is rather good, kinda like being 'skunked', the smell stays with you for a while, a long while I know this snake and I think I can say like alot of them it is about gaining their trust and showing them you mean no harm and most importantly routine, routine, routine. I have found a happy snake is usually the result of a good feeding, handling etc..routine and they do 'tame' and this particular girl had a lot of work put into her and when I met her she was as placid as a corn which I think is down to the previous owners TLC & perseverance (obviously you will get exceptions but this particular female reacted to her environment with kind).
I agree Trunx, very evil but pretty looking :)

Re: Your Colubrids
He looks great but just wait till he sheds Can't get enough of them, are you hooked yet??
Re: Your Colubrids
Well Tony, I'm going to post two pictures of her here, but then I'm going to dedicate her own thread to her... You'll see why :)

There you go Tony, at last :)
This girl is just shy of 8 foot, is 11 years old and is a fantastic snake. Unpredicatble temperament, but only because of her ferocious appetite. She was raised from a hatchling by her previous owner and for most of her life was only fed 6-7 rats per year. A real credit to her previous owner. I love her to bits and pieces!
