Your Colubrids
Hi All,
I was browsing through the RFUK site the other day and was looking through an amazing thread...you all know I'm into my pythons and boas of course and oftentimes they take up a lot of space on the forum. Let's take a look at your colubrids the diversity in this group of snakes is unbelievable, I'm sure there are quite a few spectacular animals out there...I'll start off with a pic of Jack and a Carolina Corn taken a couple of years ago and let's see where this thread goes........

Re: Your Colubrids
Guys,
I'm staggered!! No colubrids??? I just don't believe it, it's the largest snake group and contains over 2000 species.
So what you do is, get a good photo download to PC, upload to photobucket or similar and simply copy and paste the image details into your post, job done....so your Garters, Milks, Kings, Rats, Pines, Bulls, Indigoes etc etc etc
Or is it that we don't have many keepers of this group of snakes in NI?
Best,
Tony

Ady,
Now I've got to take Trunx's side here...good looks aside (and probably a very subjective observation in any case) I think we should all agree, a blind man on a galloping horse could do the photobucket thing....Trunx agreed??

Re: Your Colubrids
Some great photos guys...we got a few in the end after a little arm twisting!! Irish Vampire - what's the little brown snake you're holding? And where are all the magnificent adult Bulls and Pines? Keep 'em coming....I also understand from Trunx that Ady has taken himself away to tech 3 days a week to cover basic IT. He promises to post some photos as soon as he's qualified [it could be a while]....isn't that what he said Trunx??

Forgot to comment on the House snake it really is a little belter, will it grow a whole lot more or is that about it? I don't know a whole lot about them, why don't you scribe a few lines down and educate some of us....well me anyway!
I'm not huge into morphs and stuff and still delight at the natural patterns of animals that have developed over millions of years through natural selection.
All best,
Tony

Re: Your Colubrids
The females grow to i think a max of 5ft but usually around 4ft... males max at about 3ft...
This lil female liked to bluff strike when i got her but is the most pleasant snake now and although on some sites they say they strike hard and fast, this lil one does a gentle strike and never missed a feed even in shed..
She eats a small mouse once a week and basically same care as a corn snake. I add a moist hide in when she's shedding and shes always shed in one go.
I'm useless at write ups as u can tell but theres a great site for them here
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Theres a guy in antrim breeds them called SCI im not sure if hes a member on this site but he would be the best person to ask about them

Re: Your Colubrids
Thoth,
Great shots, I like them all, so we know Hoggie's are rear fanged and very mildly venomous right? Do you require DWA license for this animal?
I know they're all over the place and very popular but what's the bottom line? Venomous or not - DWA or not and why? Totally interested in [all of] your opinion(s) on this one.
The Milk snake's just a little cracker.
The photos are getting better guys....I still haven't seen a nice adult Bull Snake....

Re: Your Colubrids
Trunx,
Right, elongated rear teeth to puncture toads that inflate themselves in order to present far to big an item to swallow....by the way our own common toad [bufo bufo] does exactly the same to our [UK's] native grass snake [natrix natrix], for interest the grass snake also has the ability to feign dead same as the hoggy!! Sorry rambling a little....
I'd like to hear more opinion / fact reference the Hognose snake, there appears to be general debate and two camps on this one - anyone have a specific answer???
Best,
Tony

Hoggies are rear fanged, but i dont really think their venom poses a serious risk to humans unless you happen to take a serious allergic reaction to it, but this can happen with anything such as wasps etc with particular individuals.
A lot of people have speculated that the venom is frog specific, however not having been bitten i cannot testify to the fact :-)
They can be grumpy little sods however this is why i like the little gits !
