Re: buying
Hi Phil
There are numerous breeders around the place. What type of snakes are you looking for ?
What area do you live in ?

Re: buying
I have not bought a snake from a pet shop in a long lon time. I find it much better to buy from a breeder. I like to be able to see the parental stock before I buy.

Re: buying
I have to agree with Warren & Steve. Many people opt for breeders over shops when possible as you can generally meet the parents and the babies tend to cost less too and some morphs in some species you wont find in shops either. Is this about the burms your after?
meath

Re: buying
I buy from breeders every time nowadays as I got so many headaches from dealing with shops in the past. Just my personal opinion. There are so many reasons for choosing breeders every time - any problems and you can go straight to the source; you know the parentage which can be important if wanting to breed; price is always better; you know the history of the animal.....and the list goes on. Finding breeders, especially local ones, can be hard and takes time - this forum is a great place to start as many members, myself included, breed our animals. Keep an eye on the threads and you'll see who keeps and breeds what, then you can PM them for more info.
I wouldn't imagine there are too many Burm breeders around at the moment, the main reason being that trying to sell the babies to good homes who will keep them through to adulthood is a right pain in the back end, and many people are put off breeding for this reason. Also few people keep more than one Burm as they eventually need big vivs, big regular meals, and once they exceed 7ft or so require at least 2 people there when working with them. Its perhaps easier to find a pet shop or another private keeper with a handleable adult Burm for you to help out with, that way you'll get a good idea of what its like to handle one thats big. Even so, its always best to buy a hatchling and get used to it as a young snake - for 2 reasons:
1. you can raise and train it your way, e.g. tap train it to minimise the incidence of food-related bites when you go into the viv;
2. you will get used to it as it grows and your confidence will grow too - although Burms grow A LOT in their first 12-18 months so be ready to house a 6ft snake within a year of getting a hatchling!
Dumeril's - again not many people with these let alone breeding them in Ireland. Your best bet would be trying to get one from a reptile shop, or from the UK or Europe as they are more routinely bred and available there. One thing to be sure of is that if you get a Dumeril's, make sure it is feeding on rodents - and ideally rats. Young Dumeril's in particular can be very difficult to get feeding on rodents as in the wild their first meals would be lizards, so make sure you buy an established rodent feeder. Rats are the preferable food as this diet will feed them for life; a Dumeril's feeding on mice or chicks will give you a headache as you will eventually have to convert them over to rats when they grow bigger.

the most important thing with these is that they have all the proper paper work.and they can cost from around £180. and mine came from a europen breeder.
