Giant Leos?
Hi
We bought two leos last year from NIGeckos and we weighed them the other day, the female was 64 grms and the male 56grms. They were hatched last June (2010) and their father was a Giant, judging by the age and weights of these two does it seem likely they are going to be Giants too.?
John.

Re: Giant Leos?
From what Ive read up and heard, the "giant" is only really genetics like anything else, some grow bigger than others, so obviously theres a chance but omes down to genetics I suppose and the feeding i presume, also the mother would need to be pretty big too for it to follow
I think the "giant" ones are somewhere near 100grams, so goodness knows, interesting to see if anyone here knows more :) im just going what ive read from other keepers

Re: Giant Leos?
We have some giant and supergiant leopard geckos.
Our first supergiants were brought directly from Mr Ron Tremper, via Hamm. We have bred our males to both normal geckos to make giants and our supergiant female.
To be considered a supergiant the male should weigh over 100 grams at one year old, the females over 80grams.
Personally I have to agree with Greecko about diet can make some difference on the weight of the gecko. All our geckos are fed on mealworms only.
One of our babies from our first pairing of supergiant to supergiant currently weighs 105grams.
This is No1 our baby.
As you can see she is not fat at all. She is such a sweet baby and loves to be held.

Re: Giant Leos?
As you probably know John, I have a supergiant tremper albino striped female here from Ron Tremper. She is wide more so than long, but not fat. She barely ate for months and months, and has only gotten going again since I moved her into the Freedom Breeder rack. Her head is much larger than a regular female's head - she is built like our large normal male.
Despite not eating for so long, she stayed much wider in body size than any gecko I've seen, whilst her ribs were sticking out! Her diet is back with a vengeance now. I'll weigh her for you tomorrow, but the main difference i see with her compared to the normals, is definitely her build.

Re: Giant Leos?
Yeh just seems like any animal breeding and selective breeding has left us now with such large geckos, give it a few years and they will get een bigger, they dont look any different apart from the obvious stocky build

Re: Giant Leos?
Hi Guys
Thanks for all the info, I understand that the giant gene is co dominant so with one parent being a giant then it is possible that 50% of the offspring could also be giants.
We have noticed that the females head is much larger than the males and also another normal sized female we have, she also is very broad in the body again compared to the normal geckos we have.
What age was you baby female when she reached 105 grms?
Thanks
john
