Dart Frogs
I must be doing something wrong! After 16 years of trying unsuccessfully to convince the OH that dart frogs in captivity are not poisonous and would be nice to have, our son somehow persuaded her in the space of 5 minutes that they were ok and low and behold we now have two stunning Dendrobates tinctorius (courtesy of Ady).
They really are fascinating little things and seem to have settled in very well.

Re: Dart Frogs
Best wishes with these guys.
So, are you now going to expand your selection? Very tempting you know.
Good dart frogs to start with as well...those are very bold and greedy frogs, so lots of action. :)

What do you mean nice frogs Nikki, actually they are mine (well mine and Adams)
They weren't Nikkis cup of tea either but I caught her on today sitting watching them feeding and she even admitted they were 'quite cute' .

Hi lisa
They really are so active and constantly on the lookout for food, easily one of the most visually satisfying pets we have.
What type of frog do you have?

Hi Ian
I have read several articles on sexing Dart frogs but none seem to be 100% in agreement or reliable, have you any suggestions on the best way to sex these two.

Re: Dart Frogs
John, I have no idea.
Dave ran into Ben's whilst I was sitting in the jeep in the disabled parking spot ready to make a run for it if those nasty clampers tried to get us again
I wanted some red eyed green tree frogs, but david came out with a little neurologically impaired light coloured thing with spots on the back of his neck and never even thought to ask what kind of frog it is Will stick up a pic and see if you know - I'm sure it's a commonly kept frog in any case. I just know zilch about them.
The idea was just to take him to scent food with for the eyelash vipers. But I am taking rather a fancy to these guys of late, and will definitely pick up some nice critters for myself at our next show

There are a number of methods that could have a use across the various types of dart frogs.....some are questionable, some are pretty reliable depending upon species.
Some people quote 'relative sizes' (not very reliable as many other factors come into play eg age, husbandry), or 'hunch in the back' (again, it may depend on a number of other factors), or 'relative distance between eyes' (I like that one, but it needs mre work), or 'toe pads'.
Some say that 'calling' is the sign of a male....but females also call in some species. That also puts the darkened throat idea in check....and it depends on whether the maturity and conditions will make a male call or not.
For Dendrobates tinctorius..... males have much wider toe pads on their front toes; females tend to have the toe pads being about the same size between back and front legs.
I was trying to see what the colours are in the pictures....to see if what looks like a yellow back is light yellow or whitish.
From the pics posted, and without any other info, there are a number of morphs that these could be. The digital picture may be slightly over-exposed or the colour balance could be off. But, they could be along the lines of either....
Oyapock (whiter shade of yellow), or 'Patricia' (a darker shade of yellow), or some locale within the 'Tafelberg - Kayserberg -Cobalt' surinam morphs with a yellowish head, or even a 'French Guinea Dwarf Cobalt'.
There are a few non-natural morphs on the market that often look somewhat like these frogs eg an 'Azureus' x 'Regina' cross, and an 'Azureus' x 'Surinam Powder Blue' cross (I believe they sell them as 'Agreja').
I'm thinking more 'patricia-like'.
@Lisa...... I see you have one of them problem feeders. No fun.
ian
Re: Dart Frogs
looking good john, i was sold them as dyeing poison darts but that is just a common name for most of the tinc family, i think they are tinc. patricia they have very light blue legs and the yellow is on the darker side compared to the oyapock
reptile ni- I've no home to goto

Re: Dart Frogs
Most of the tincs do go around the trade as simply 'dyeing poison darts' (which doesn't help).
I would put my money on 'patricia'....and i suspect a slight overexposure of the pictures give a more white appearance.
Reptile NI....as you've seen these in the flesh...then you'd have seen the darker yellow.
Dart Frogs and Tarantulas are things that I'm pushing towards getting an increased profile.....so let's see some more dart frog stuff.:)
