New article added to the HSI webpage
Hi All,
A recent thread on a forum highlighted the problems concerning the keeping of certain species of turtle in captivity. The Herpetological Society of Ireland was asked to comment on the situation, however on such a complex topic as this it was felt that a more in depth response was required. While the HSI does not condone nor condemn the keeping of turtles in captivity there are certainly some serious considerations to be made on this topic.
To this end an article on the keeping of larger turtle species in captivity has been put up on our webpage. This article presents a balanced view of this subject, with tips for husbandry alongside information on the native ecology of the problem species. Realistic information is given concerning the adult sizes of these species,
comment is also passed on species that may be more suitable for captivity. While many more pages could have been written it was necessary to keep the discussion to a reasonable length. It is hoped that, whatever your view, you will find this article interesting and informative.
As always, the HSI promotes a policy of "best practice" where the captive husbandry of reptiles is concerned.
A summary of the article can be found at http://www.thehsi.org/feature_articles/feature_cathendry_art1.php
with the full length article available to members of the HSI from the same page.
