different hog island boa.
Not to be out done by Hilarys Hog island boa, i thought i put a pic of my "little" female hog island boa who is also gravid, or so i believe.
this photo is about 3weeks old so shes a little larger now. lol
she'll either be lying like this or sprawled out on her side so im fairly sure she is. but time will tell, i checked my date and miss counted, she should be due 2nd week of July, so i think more or less spot on hilarys dates. lol

Re: different hog island boa.
So is less speckling something that is more desirable in this particular snake?? I think she looks nice, but then I suppose a lot of things are personal opinion as beauty is in the eye or the beholder....
Re: different hog island boa.
sometimes, as you say its all in the eye of the beholder, some people prefer the more wild looking hog, which she most certainly does when she not in her night time colours as she is here, she is alot darker and heavily speckled.
the father during day is like a pale brown and changes to almost a pale pale mint green, and after a shed has alot of pink hues down his sides and has very little speckling any time day or night. ill try find his photos from last year, might even be on here actually.

Re: different hog island boa.
Nice Hog Paul, is she lying belly-up quite a bit? Or lying in as tight coil when the room temps go down a bit?

Re: different hog island boa.
They lay belly-up sometimes?...you really do learn something new everyday
Re: different hog island boa.
Yeah if a female is gravid they sometimes lie belly-up, or at least on their side.....you see it if they are digesting a big meal sometimes too. My female Bredl's has been at it recently which *hopefully* is a good sign.

Re: different hog island boa.
So without taking too much away from the thread but out of curiosity I have to ask is this a comfort thing as with many animals our selves included the further along you go the more uncomfortable it can be with the pressure carrying little 'uns can bring?
Re: different hog island boa.
IMO its related to thermoregulation - I have found with my carpets that if a gravid female gets a little too warm where shes resting, she'll adopt the inverted posture and, if the temps continue to increase, she'll then move to a cooler spot in the viv. I've also seen the reverse happen and see a female bask under a ceramic heater and invert, so here she's clearly warming her belly rather than trying to cool it down.
It seems that then females know the perfect temps for egg / neonate development and will adjust their behaviour and postures to maintain this. I have a few photos somewhere of the inverted posturing, I'll see if I can dig them out and start a new thread.

Re: different hog island boa.
BRB on side, prior to this photo she was fully inverted....belly up! which is a bad sign for pretty much everything less a gravid snake...

Re: different hog island boa.
How fascinating. Thanks Tony. Guys a thread with contributions from you all (photos, info etc...) about this would be great
Re: different hog island boa.
gorgeous hog! I have to say, I prefer the lighter, cleaner looking specimens - and there's nothing wrong with this one. If the dad is even cleaner please post pics!
Best of luck with impending birth. My big yellow boa has been acting gravid forever. She was scanned etc and we thought we witness POS etc...obviously not. Because there's no sign of anything happening. I've finaly come to the conclusion that she's going to be gravid forever - or at least until this happens to me -
can't wait to see some baby hoggs, they are def one of my favourite boa localities -a lot of ppl don't give them their due credit anymore as they've become so common in captivity of late. Everyone should have one. And bet yourself and hilary, everyone may very soon!
