Hi tony

That looks like a costal carpet python (morelia spilota mcdowelli)?

i have only been bitten twice (if you could even call it that) once was by a relatively grumpy royal python in moloch gibbon's house, and once by a cali king which i think jack might remember from reptile world in bangor.......

It took about twenty minutes to get it off my finger lol

Hey we've all been there right? We all come to learn pretty early on that rodents and any combination of cleaning or handling equals getting tagged...what are your thoughts on the big old snake having a good chew on that fellas face?

Warren,

Don't just leave us like that.......you've been at this for years and must have been tagged once or twice along the way right? As such you must have a good tale or two up your sleeve....that you're prepared to share..... Very Happy Very Happy

Post by Warren_Booth Sat Apr 03, 2010 10:11 am

You know Tony, in all the years I have been keeping, I actually haven't been bitten that much. The ones I can remember are all from Amazon Tree Boas. I had a large 6ft gravid female about 10 years ago that I had taken out to give the once over. I always used welding gloves as I imagined a bite from a big amazon would hurt. Well, this girl was very placid that day. She crawled up my arm slowly. Then proceeded to slowly, very slowly, open her mouth and, again, very slowly bite my arm at the elbow. I have to say, it was kind of painful to have that many teeth slowly pierce your skin.

Another one I remember was from a litter of Amazons that female dropped one year for me. I house all baby snakes together from birth until they shed, and with amazons I offer food to each baby when in a group. (I find that once one eats the rest follow). Anyway, I reached into the vivarium I was group housing 17 baby amazons. One decided to bite me right on the finger tip, then proceeded to slowly try and consume my finger tip. Very funny.

Oh, one more. I was bitten by a 12 foot Moluccan Amethystine python. This was one Jonathan owned. He had them for a year or two and they showed no signs of breeding interest. So, one day we decided to sex them. I grabbed the snake behind the neck (They were rather unpleasant animals to say the least). Well, I was about an inch to far down the neck. The snake reached round and bite me on the arm. This was not painful in any way. Well, later that day I picked up a box and suddenly pain shot up my arm and I lost sensation to the back of my hand. The area the snake bite was right were a lot of nerves are located. The teeth must have knicked a lot of the nerves and then once I put force on the muscles/tendons near them they ripped. Anyway, aout 4 months later I regained feeling to the back of my hand.

So, thats about it really. Nothing dramatic, nothing too nasty.

this guy nails anyone within a few feet of him. Even throws himself out of the tub he's currently in (even more aggressive in large spaces) to tag you. He's fast, he's nasty and he'll be 15 ft prob before we know it.
Hopefully gentle handling (with welding gloves up to armpits!) will calm him down...

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Lucky for him he's so pretty...

Have had a few nasty bites over past few yrs now. Last two yrs prob more so than ever bet a cpl of feisty buggers we have here at min inc carpets, retics and a pair of corns that like nothing better than to latch on. (can't feel them tho, so prob doesn't count!)
Dave got a lovely bite from a carpet the other night - it was totally uncalled for as well. snake lunged out of viv and left what winded up being 4 teeth (i think!) lodged in his hand Snake Bite...Ouch!!! 772154

Hmmmm, I'd say thats a Coastal carpet M. s. mcdowelli, with nice diluted body patterning.

My worst bite came from my adult female Coastal, it was entirely my own fault.....I reached in to remove her from her hide to photograph her, and being hungry she turned around and nailed my hand across the edge of my palm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

She left 54 little holes in my hand, but luckily no teeth :) The worst part was holding my hand still while she tried to pull her teeth out - not nice. Alas, a stupid mistake made, lesson learned and never to be forgotten!

All joking aside, I think that looks and sounds very painful, I'd say the removal was worse then the puncture?

Tan...I must say I agree with lisafay, for an outdoor man Karl you're hands sure would qualify for advertising "Mild Green Fairy Liquid"!! lol!

But seriously that's a real nailing.......

Years ago I had a real nasty yellow rat snake that managed to get stuck behind a radiator....no way he was coming out, so I had to try and coax him out by hand...multiple strikes and bites later I eventually succeeded....funny how you always remember the best nailings and they're almost always our own fault!! Very Happy

LOL Lisa & Tony, what can I say, I was just born with them like that. Amazing I know. Maybe I should contact P&G UK and try to negotiate a deal for a new run of Fairy Liquid ads? I could be onto something here guys......

The initial bite was fine, it was keeping my hand stock still while she see-sawed her jaws back and forth to dislodge her teeth that wasn't too nice - but I think she and I were both shocked at the same time!

As soon as she let go I was so amazed at how much blood came from my palm that I grabbed a camera and snapped it before washing it. Weird perhaps, but I thought it was cool! Not that I'd recommend it or do it again LOL.

I actually got nailed by my wee Diamond Jungle Jag lastnight, first bite in ages, it was on the corner of the palm and for a small bite it bled quite a bit! Bites to the palm just seem to bleed quite a bit.
