Information and pictures
Hi all,
I am doing a 15 minute presentation in college and was railroaded into picking spiders as i am absolutely terrified of them. I must say since starting the research for it i now have a new respect for them and realise they really are facinating creatures (still dont want to be in the same room as them tho). The teacher is hoping that at the end of the research and presentation i will be able to hold a spider which i really seriously doubt as i still feel physically ill even looking at them and the thoughts of touching one is a completly different story.
Anyways i have found the forum to be really informative and some really cool pictures and was just wondering if any of you would mind if i used some of your pictures for my presentation?
Cheers
Laura

Re: Information and pictures

Re: Information and pictures
I don't think you'll own one. Joe, Laura saying she thinks some are kinda pretty is a HUGE step. You have to remember this is a phobia so I reckon shes done very well but I would bet money your snake collection will grow
Re: Information and pictures
Trust me when I say that it is a lot of hard work getting from a phobia to actually living in a house with over 50 Tarantlas. 2 of these I own myself and I am proud to say that I have managed to get this far. I am far from over the phobia and still balk at the site of a house spider, however I am what you might call comfortable with my own Tarantulas...
Congrats on getting this far Laura! What are you studying in college?
Here's a picture of a rack where we keep a lot of our hairy friends:
Here are some pictures of an adult female Mexican Red Knee (Brachypelma smithi) and her enclosure:
The underside and fangs of a Brazilian Red (Nhandu carapoensis):
Thai Zebra (Haplopelma albostriatum):
An arboreal Enclosure put together for a Ghost Ornamental (Poecilotheria pederseni):
Adult female Chile Rose (Grammostola rosea):
Paulie - My baby Chile Rose (Grammostola rosea):
White Stripe/Stripe Legged Birdeater (Nhandu chromatus) with some great webbing in her enclosure:
And for good measure, a tiny, terrifiying little luminous fella I spotted on my mum's jumper one day:
Sorry for the overload, left a lot of terrible pics out, hope that one or two of them are of use to you.
Tony here has some great pics floating about if you can get his permission to use them :)

Re: Information and pictures
Oh wow got mad stomach churing feeling looking at the rack, just the thoughts of all them spiders in one place. I think ive figured that i dont mind the tarantualas too much because they are furry and i can relate them to a nice friendly furry creature (well thats what im trying to tell myself) but that zebra one and baby one no way id pass out. Im studing to be a facilitator / trainer, hoping to work with youth offenders or recovering addicts but this could change buy the time i finish as it has drastically changed since i starter.

Re: Information and pictures
Don't mind her Milca, she likes to beat up the elderly and the helpless Nah that rack made me shiver just a tad bit. How in gods name does anyone deal with all those moults, honestly, I think I'd join you Laura in the passing out. I have to say they are gorgeous spids all the same (when not moulting lol)

Re: Information and pictures
You might be best with a Chile Rose to help with your phobias. Getting a red rump is likely to only feed your fears as they are generally quite demented. All 4 of ours are very, very aggressive and fast.
Re: Information and pictures
Im really happy now because the instructor we have for this subject is gone so i still have to do the assignment but the new instructor doesnt know anyone who owns spiders so i DONT have to hold one by the end. YAY :)
I also never thought id have a snake in my house and i have a lovely baby corn.

Re: Information and pictures
She can ring me if she wants :P lol - Just kidding
Thanks very much Laura, they're a full time job but all well worth it. When you're ready for kids you're ready for an African Grey. They're such a big responsibility and need to be with you for life. Our fella is a big child and always will be. He's great fun to be around.
As for the Iguana, another fantastic species, but a lot of time, effort and experience is needed to get them to a point where they appreciate attention.
Best of luck with your assignment and if there is anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to give me a shout.
