Re: Some spiders
Gd, gd...great first efforts
The higher your F stop the more depth of field...so if a snake is facing you head on [for sake of argument your point of focus is his mouth] and your f stop is set to say F2.8 for example the point of focus will be sharp and mostly all around it the same, however, if you look past the mouth towards his eyes and further to his neck and beyond, you'll notice to focus has up and run away...if you icrease the f stop from say 2.8 to 5.6 you're reducing the aperture [allowing less light in] however, increasing the focal length...you might now see an in focus mouth and eye and rear of head....the higher the f stop the more depth of field [focus throughout the depth of your subject] of course the higher the f stop the more light your probably going to need so high iso and flash will become important....
Try this, get a coke can sit it on it's side facing you, at f2.8 you should have clear, crisp focus....now twist the can so you're taking a shot of it down it's length, firstly at f2.8 and then at 5.6 or higher...see the difference? In focus through the subject? That's depth of field...
Have a play around with the camera and you'll soon get the hang of it and what it can do....top tip....don't give it back to your uncle!!!
Happy snappin'
