GUTTED! Empty GUTTED!

Post by Phil Sun Jun 24, 2012 9:27 am

yesterday evening my female hypo het leopard who was bred to a het leopard gave birth to 8 slugs and 4 live and 1 still. I'm pretty sure this litter had just been born and as i didn't see any of the young moving I moved as fast as I could to get the mother out and see what was going on. When I started to get newborns out it was clear that they had huge yoke sacks so where a litte premature but also they had not broke out of their birth sacks. I qiucky burst the sacks and watched them gasp for air. They where very weak and very lethargic, all but one died during the night.

looks like 2 leopards, 1 hypo leopard, 1 hypo poss het and 1 normal/hypo poss het.

This is the only survivour but I'm not sure it's going to make it.

Aww mate, thats pure wick like. Gutted for ya man. Was really lookin forward to seeing some hypo leapords.

Have you any ideas of what could have caused her to throw them out prematurely or is it just one of those things?

Well congrtats on the sonoran litter, at least its not all bad!

Cheers mate, I still have a gravid het leopard that was bred to a hypo het leopard but was also in with a normal het leopard so fingers crossed the hypo did the job and I will still get hypo leopards this year.

Yeah, 2 weeks ago I had an orange tail hypo motley female that bred to a leopard slug out on me aswell, but this si the way it goes. If it was easy and everything went to plan it would be boring!

Well i suppose your right mate, ya have to take the good with the bad. It must be so frustrating tho, do you think it might have something to do with the leapord gene as i am near sure the litter of Warrens that slugged out recently had leapord in the mix, mabye more than one strain of the gene or something like the albinos, that is less compatible?

I guess i have all this fun to look forward to, im attempting a bit of breeding myself here soon with the falsies. Seen them locked a few times over xmas but nothing came from it. I have been told by a few breeders overseas that the female is most receptive after a shed and i just noticed my girl had big blue eyes last night so gona stick the male in for round 2 as soon as shes shed.

I think warrens breeding was actaully hypo x hypo. I have heard of issues with the european line of leopards and this is why I sourced outcrossed hets from the states and both pairs are from different breeders. My group now consists of 3 differnt lines of sonoran, insuring good genetic diversity.

Boas are tempramental breeders, you can do everything right one year and have great results only to fail miserably the next year but yet have done nothing different. This can be said about snakes in general. Weather this is down to unpretictable circumstances or a still evolving library of knowlege is unclear but I think time will bring more understanding.
