Anacondas!! (pic heavy)

Post by RolandRatSnake on Mon Jan 09, 2012 4:54 am

hello folks, i had my 1st real handling session with my green at the weekend, its the 1st time i have went anywhere near him in nearly 2 weeks bar water changes and the difference was unreal. he was soo calm when being lifted out, no biting or flailing about, he just wanted to explore for a bit and then he coiled up round my hand and sat there nice as you like for about 10 mins. soo pleased with the way things went i hope its the start of things to come...

the little yellow shed over the weekend too so managed to get a few snaps of her, she made life a bit difficult tho as i startled her when trying to find her a she was all burrowed away sleeping so she took a couple of swipes at me, lucky for me she missed but unluckily for her she got a mouthfull of bark which i had to fish out with a pair of tweezers but thankfully she took this quite well.

i made the mistake once before of putting this girl in a tub while doing maintenance in her tank and she came out like a lunatic so now we have an understanding and she coils up around my arm while i do everything from changing substrate to washing out water bowls and generally running about the house, this is anaconda bracelet...

Lucky you, two condas!

we've a little male here ourselves (green) - he tagged Dave the minute we got him home Very Happy

I haven't done any handling work with him yet but must get around to it!

I really, really like your yellow actually. How is your green for feeding?

Thaks Lisa,

yea mine chewed me real good the 1st time i picked him up, he was coming out of a bag so knew it was coming but even when home he was super nervous and as soon as he felt any kind of touch on him he freaked and tried to bolt so i ended up having to grab and hold him while he flailed about trying to bite anything he could.

heres my hand after picking him up for the 1st time, cleaned up a bit when the pic was taken but the amount of blood was mental lol...

as for feeding, i tried him on my feeding night, he refused but i kinda expected him too as i think i only had him 2 days, just thought it was worth a try, he showed a bit of interest but then curled up on the rat and went to sleep!

i wasnt planning on touching him before he fed for me and i left him completely for nearly 2 weeks there but had been talking to a few folk about handling techniques and curiosity got the beter of me hence the pics lol.

not touching him til the weekend here and gona try again, hopefully he will take, tho i have heard its not unusual for them to go off food at this time of year so not too worried yet.

Loving the bracelet! Beautiful snakes. The little Yellow is my fave of the two but both looking well. How big do these guys max out at roughly?

I'm sitting here after reading your posts on the biting and looking at the image of the bites and Lisa you wonder why I am afraid of the big 'uns LOL such a wuss but sticking with my little things thank you

thank you very much Tan, everyone seems to sway towards the yellow, tho she is alot cuter il give her that lol...

as far as im aware yellow males can get anywhere between 6-10ft and females can potentially get up to around 12ft but going by the parents who where on the smaller end of the scale she shouldt get super big, famous last words, lol...

that pic is prob the worst i have been bitten yet, think that was aroud 5-6 at once when tryin to get him outa the bag. tbh the bites arent that bad, just alot of pin pricks at once, but for a while after my little finger was quite stingy, it swole up around 3 times bigger than the other one that night but was fine by morning, just a bit tender.

and to be fair id rather take that off the conda than take a bite off a hamster or gerbil or anything along those lines, im a wuss when it comes to furry stuff lol...

Nice 'condas! I used to own a Green and a Yellow for several years and they were both as mental as caged apes. Yours seems a lot nicer to handle, especially the Green, so hopefully yours stay that way!

'Condas are nice snakes, its just such a pity they (a) grow so darn big and (b) bite like a chainsaw from side to side. Still, as you say, a conda bite is usually gonna be waaaay better than a bite from some small furry animal with great big buck teeth!

You think that's a bad bite, wait until they grow a bit! Dave seems to walk into scar inducing situations with the biggest snakes in the house on a regular basis, but I am usually far more lucky. Or rather, I think it is down to my superior snake handling abilities Wink

That said, when I do get a bite it's usually a bad 'un!

The yellow is beautiful, but as a rule I much prefer the greens. Our green has not been here all that long, has been feeding okay, but only on chicks thus far. If you're ever down in Rep Village you should have a chat to James about the green condas' diets! He has some pretty interesting info Wink

thanks man, yea the yellow is a wee darling to work with, the green is still very nervous but i dont think i will have any bother taming him down, just have to have to be aware of what you are doing, if i tried to pick that guy up like i do my boas he would have me but confident deliberate movements seem to work.

and yea man, the fact they can bite from any angle is i nightmare like, they dont go into the usual 'S' position so you dont know its coming then bam teeth mark city lol...

ah right i had it in my head they where at the stage where they where slowing down on the growing front, then again i think she was in chainsaw mode when you where telling me about the parents so wasnt really concentrating lol... i know they never stop really, so looks like we could have a monster yet then lol

hehe its bad enough for me at the minute thanks, im just lucky most of mine are still quite small, the odds are the other way round for you working with the big guys. my bites arent for now bad but i kinda wouldnt mind taking a hit off something bigger, not for bragging rights or to sound hard its just i find the fear of the unknown to be far greater than what actually will happen. tho i have seen some rough ones...

im gona try rats this weekend for my guy but good to know chicks are an option, will have to pick a few up, dont really keep them as only the falsie eats them and they run the guts outa her which aint pretty lol...

never heard of reptile village, i take it, its down in the deep south?
