Got my first snake!
Hi guys havent been on here in a while due to a lack of free time with college.. but Im sure Ill be on here loads now because I've gotten my first snake! She's an 8 month old common boa and shes beautiful! I'll post pictures when I get some decent ones. She was starting to shed when I bought her and was in with another boa whos colours were a bit nicer but she had such a lovely temperment and was so friendly I had to have her! I know common boas get quite big but thats not a problem I'll be prepared when it comes to it. I took her out for a bit when I got home from work and shes been exploring her viv for the last few hours since I put her back. I think she might get the scent of my hamster in the air and be hungry because she looks like shes trying to find a way out to get to him.
I have a hide with damp moss in it a small water bowl and a container of water big enough for her to sit in and the viv has the right temps and humidity so hopefully her shed goes well. Any extra tips or advice are welcome!

Re: Got my first snake!
Just be careful using hide boxes with damp moss as I have seen so many boas with skin rot due to them being kept to wet. far better just to give the viv a bit of a spray once a day when coming up to a shed.
Here's a link to the best care sheet on the net [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I also recommend THE COMPLETE BOA CONSTRICTOR by Vin Russo. If you are keeping boa constrictors should always be at your side

Re: Got my first snake!
Thanks for the advice Ill take the damp moss out.. she hasnt been using that hide anyway. Shed seems to be going well I've sprayed the viv and I've spotted her taking dips in her water bowl. She seems to be quite smart she tries to push the glass doors open and she's very curious poking around everything in her viv and climbing up branches.
Ill have a look at that caresheet and see if I can get a copy of that book.

Re: Got my first snake!
"she still has a bit to shed around her eye" has she got eye caps? if so you will have to get them of asap, as they could lead to alot of problems like infections or blindness,
to get the caps of put the snake in warm water for 30mins take her out if she still has the caps on, (my method) cotton bud, dip it in warm water gently rub the eye cap until it comes of...if she aint got eyecaps, just simply ingore this

Re: Got my first snake!
The eye caps have come off since I took her home... I'd say it wasn't humid enough in the tub she was in in the pet shop because they were still on when I got her an the tub seemed quite dry. I know her colouring isn't the best but her temperment won me over even in shed with her eye caps on she was so friendly and loves exploring. I fed her for the first time last night it was amazing seeing her eat. I know you cant handle them for a few days after they eat but if you feed them in a seperate tub is it ok to lift them from the tub back to the viv or is there a less stressful way for them?
Heres a pic of her first feed from me (she took it from the tail but turned it around and swallowed from the head).

Re: Got my first snake!
I'm not sure what locality she is I was just told she's a common boa. I find all the different types of boas and localities very confusing tbh but I'll ask the shop if they know more when I go back.

Re: Got my first snake!
She's great she has a lovely temperment and loves her food. I'm really happy with her. Have some problems with a retained eye cap that she's had since before I got her but I brought her into ben in reptile haven and he said I can bring her back in after a good long soak and he'll sort it out for me. So I'll be doing that this week. I'm delighted with her overall!
