SPCA snakes

Post by Tan on Mon Aug 30, 2010 12:28 pm

Heres the two 'black rats' I collected from the SPCA today. The larger ones in shed but I was warned he's very aggressive and the little one is about a foot long and as cute as they come. Anyway I reckon black kings but am in need of all you snake guru guys help on identification. I also wondered as I know we have some keepers of blacks, do they have any white on them at all? The smaller one has some white under the chin but no other markings on the body that I can see (what looks like markings in the pics is poo) and the larger appears to be black all over and lighter under chin. So what are they??

They look like classic examples of Mexican Black Kingsnakes - the big shield-like head scales point to a Lampropeltis - and Mexis also have variable amounts of creamy pale blotches on the undersides.

Thank you Karl. SPCA do this to me every time. Misidentification seems very common (but doesn't surprise me) & I've had no problems in the past figuring out what I'm taking. I thought head wise they look like kings & I thought blacks but then I've been wrong before and never seen such a tenny weeny one. He's too cute.

Actually there's a question, what size do black kings average on hatching cause this guys wincey. I'll google too but interested in replys.

I'll get some pics of the 'corn' up in a while. Thanks again for the info Karl

Thank you guys. As it turns out, Nikki is going to lend a hand and take on the bigger guy. It frees me up some what as I'm already dealing with a couple of grumpish ones but so far he only seems a little nervy but then thats expected given his adventures the past week.

SO a big 'you go girl' to Nikki (sorry, I had to, everyone always thinks you're female)

He's a mad dude, mental sense of humour, dark hair, pony tail and goatie.. Has I think 3 kids and is a vlunteer rescuer for tghe NDSPCA.. I happened t mention that you helped taking in some exotics, hogs etc from them and he said, oh I know Tanya, yes taken stuf her way before,.. (Put it this way lol.. We split into groups to do handling and treatment of Wildlife workshops and the vet asked our group what type of rehabilitation we were all in, in a split second he said drugs! and had us all in tears laughing.. you can imagine how the rest of the day went lol)..

It was a super event.. Well worth it just to meet other.. Les Stocker, from St. Tiggywinkes Wildlife Hospital in London arived and Sandra, from 2nd Chance Wildlife Centre, and I where chatting to him for an hour or more.. What an amazing guy..

Pity you culdn't have made it.. was very interesting day all round..
