Wama,

Not sure about the prices....good link and reminder to ensure your animals are secured...

Also the term poisonous when referring to a snake....venomous is the correct reference...Very Happy

Both terms are often used to describe the other, in truth they are different. In nature, poison and venom contain toxins that are produced naturally, however, it's the delivery mechanism that really sets one apart from the other.

A poison may be absorbed [through the skin] or ingested [swallowed] or inhaled, so...an animal that is poisonous can only deliver toxins in the event another animal decides to have it for breakfast or touch it.

A venom differs as it requires to be injected directly into the circulatory system to become effective, so... an animal that is venomous delivers it's toxins into other animals by injecting venom directly into the blood stream. There are several different delivery methods, however, snakes pretty much all [unless you know different] pierce with specialist fangs, whether hinged, fixed front or rear. Viperidae, Elapidae and Colubridae respectively.

Particular species of frogs are poisonous....while snakes are venomous.

In snakes, venom is widely accepted as a modified saliva that has evolved over millions of years to become the potent incapacitant that it is today… in animals that produce poisons especially the dart frogs it is widely accepted that the animals diet is responsible for the poison potency……

It would be great to hear other differences between Poison and Venom, I’m sure there are more…and I reckon one or two of you out there can articulate it in a better fashion than I'm able… Very Happy

Great link to an article on the Golden Poison Frog, as the article indicates, considered to be one of the most poisonous vertebrates in the world….. Shocked

I wonder what the venomous snakes were? Surely it would make sense to report what they were so if any turn up unexpectedly, people can start asking questions.

Yes it did Paul. I've often skipped over stuff without intending it sometimes.

The remaining 16 snakes include four poisonous Western Hognoses

As Tony highlighted the difference between poisonous and venomous.

Yeah I read the Hognose bit but thought as some snakes were being described as 'dangerous in the wrong hands' that there must have been other 'poisonous' snakes among the collection that got stolen. Hognoses are not dangerous in the wrong hands......sensationalist journalism yet again. This bugs the life out of me!
